Call for International Research Proposal

IMG as part of its collaborative venture with the University of Reading (UoR), the United
Kingdom invites proposal for comparative research and publication of academic papers on the
following areas from the Kerala state government employees.

1. Migration Flows and Open Urbanism:

Global population changes, international and rural to urban migration and the growth of
informal settlements is testing existing planning approaches for urban expansion, from the
master planning of new towns to renewal strategies for existing urban areas. The large
number of people migrating and the speed in which they settle, and change or develop an
urban area demands a much more dynamic approach to planning. Also recent developments
in social media have opened up the planning process to final users. Systems for participatory
practices are, in general, rather well developed in developing countries. The participatory
processes of Argentina, Brazil and Kerala, India, for instance, are rather well known.
However, the efficacy of these processes of open urbanism in tackling migration challenges is
less clear. Comparative research on practices of open urbanism and their efficacy for
addressing particular challenges of migration is proposed under this theme.

2. Legal Structure and Financial System of Real Estate:

One of the most important barriers to the development of transparent property-led
development is the legal framework. In particular the establishment of property rights, the
maintenance of land registers and systems for retrieval of land related information are
typically obscure, outdated and cumbersome. Comparative research of legal frameworks that
surround property led development is proposed under this theme.

3. Planning, Governance and Urban Infrastructure:

With an increasing percentage of the population living in cities, the provision and
management of urban infrastructure is proving to be a challenge both in the developed and
developing worlds. Urban infrastructure also has a dialectic relationship with urban form and
sustainability issues. Through comparative research, this research theme aims to unpack the
financial, institutional and equity dimensions of transportation, water, waste (solid and
liquid), energy provision, communication technologies and governance in cities. The final
aim is to link these to particular urban forms and sustainability issues (e.g. green energy,
green walls, anti-flooding measures, water harvesting/recycling, etc.)
Those who are interested in undertaking research and publication of academic papers on the
above areas may submit their proposal to the Director, IMG on or before 31st October, 2012.
All the proposals received will be forwarded to the University of Reading for scrutiny and
final approval. The research activities as above may be commenced only after getting
approval for the proposal from the University of Reading (UoR), the United Kingdom.
